Arles mayor Patrick de Carolis leaves hospital to recover at home

Arles mayor Patrick de Carolis has left hospital after 10 days being treated for a pulmonary embolism.

The 72-year-old was admitted after becoming short of breath while helping firefighters during severe weather in the southern French town.

He said his condition was reassuring and that he will recover at home for a few days before returning to work.

De Carolis has been mayor since 2020, and his absence has left his first deputy, Mandy Graillon, in charge of the town of about 52,000 people.

Graillon will continue as acting mayor until his health allows him to resume his duties.

The town had been dealing with severe weather and flooding, and De Carolis had shared information about help available to residents while in hospital.
