Alexander Skarsgård wears a claustrophobic wicker suit in Wicker

Alexander Skarsgård plays a wicker husband in Wicker, a comedy-drama arriving in cinemas this weekend.

The Swedish actor said the heavy, hot costume caused panic and claustrophobia because it was stuck to his face and he could not remove it during the day.

The story is set in a medieval village where people are known by their jobs and women face punishment for independence.

A fisherwoman asks a basket-maker to create her a husband, and the wicker man’s conduct becomes the talk of the village.

The film stars Olivia Colman as the fisherwoman and Peter Dinklage as the basket-maker, and is directed by Eleanor Wilson and Alex Huston Fischer.

The fable uses village gossip to explore envy and love, while also giving the filmmakers room to build a handmade visual world.

The costume was created with help from New Zealand’s Weta Workshop, and the film is now opening in cinemas.

The suit was heavy and hot, and stuck to my face. I couldn't take it off all day, to have lunch or breathe a little.
