Taiwan detains party leader over alleged Chinese election sponsorship
Taiwan detained Lin Te-wang, chair of the Taiwan People's Communist Party, over allegations linked to local election campaigns.
Prosecutors say he ran for borough chief under the direction and sponsorship of China's Communist Party and told another party member to run in a different borough.
They also allege Lin recruited voters to travel to mainland China and receive hospitality in an effort to buy votes.
A court ordered Lin detained, while the other party member was released on bail; the other people questioned were also released.
Taiwan's local elections are set for November 28, and their results may indicate support for President Lai Ching-te's Democratic Progressive Party ahead of the 2028 presidential election.
Prosecutors are investigating suspected foreign interference, amid frequent Taiwanese claims of Chinese meddling and Beijing's claim to Taiwan; China and Taiwan have been governed separately since 1949.
