South Korea weighs expanding naval unit for Hormuz, rules out joining war

South Korea is considering strengthening its Cheonghae naval unit in the Strait of Hormuz, a key route for shipping and oil.

National Security Director Wi Seong-lac said on Friday that the option was being weighed after a US request to send forces to the region.

The review has not been completed, so no final decision has been announced.

Wi said South Korea would not take part in a war under any circumstances.

He said any action would be limited to protecting merchant ships, oil supplies and people and making a necessary international contribution.

The next step is a decision on whether to expand the unit and what limited activities it might carry out.
