Rams release Harrison Mevis and sign Blake Grupe after loss to Bills

The Los Angeles Rams released kicker Harrison Mevis after their 37-34 overtime loss to the Buffalo Bills.

Mevis missed two field goals in the game, including a 48-yard attempt that was blocked in overtime.

He has made five of nine field goals this season, the lowest success rate in the NFL, though the accounts differ on his extra-point total.

The Rams signed Blake Grupe from the New York Jets’ practice squad to replace him.

Grupe previously played for the New Orleans Saints and Indianapolis Colts and has made 81.9% of his career field goals.

Los Angeles is seeking more reliable kicking after a loss in which a field goal could have won the game.

Grupe now gets the chance to handle the Rams’ kicking duties, while the Jets have kept Jason Sanders as their starter.

Sean McVayRams head coach
I thought offensively and defensively we battled. Thought some of the coverage units, we did some really good stuff. And then the kicking game, especially with our PAT, field goal — not even close to good enough. It cost us the game tonight.
