Samsung SDI Returns to Profit as Energy Storage Battery Sales Grow

South Korean battery maker Samsung SDI returned to operating profit in the third quarter of 2026, reporting revenue of 4.6856 trillion won and operating profit of 407.8 billion won.

A year earlier, it had posted an operating loss of 591.3 billion won.

Battery sales rose as demand grew for energy storage systems, which store electricity, and backup units used by AI data centers.

The company said battery revenue increased 55.3% from a year earlier, with higher sales also of batteries for power tools and electric vehicles.

Samsung SDI has secured more than 60 gigawatt-hours of US energy storage orders so far this year and plans to use and expand a plant in Indiana for battery production.

The results also included higher sales and profits from electronic materials used in semiconductors and foldable-phone displays.

The company expects energy storage demand to keep growing in the fourth quarter, while electric-vehicle demand is likely to differ by region, with Europe improving and the US remaining subdued.
