Higher vitamin D linked to healthier fat measures after bariatric surgery
Researchers at Beijing Friendship Hospital followed 113 adults with obesity after bariatric surgery.
They used CT scans before surgery and one year later to measure muscle and abdominal fat, alongside blood tests for vitamin D. Bariatric surgery can cause major weight loss, but vitamin D deficiency is common after these procedures.
Higher vitamin D levels were associated with less fat inside certain muscles and lower visceral fat at the one-year follow-up.
However, among patients whose vitamin D levels rose, the changes were not significantly linked to changes in the body measurements after statistical correction.
The study shows an association, not that vitamin D caused the differences, and all participants were prescribed vitamin D and calcium after surgery.
More research is needed to clarify how vitamin D relates to changes in muscle and fat after bariatric surgery.
A study found that higher vitamin D levels after bariatric surgery were associated with less fat infiltration in certain muscles and lower visceral fat.
The prospective study followed 113 adults with obesity who underwent bariatric surgery at Beijing Friendship Hospital.
Researchers used quantitative CT scans to assess body composition before surgery and at a one-year follow-up.
All participants were prescribed vitamin D and calcium supplements after surgery.
Among patients whose vitamin D levels increased, the changes were not significantly associated with changes in fat and muscle measurements after correction for multiple comparisons.
