Mexican lawmakers clash over social programs and electoral claims

PAN lawmaker Kenia López Rabadán and Morena’s Vianey García clashed during a session of Mexico’s Chamber of Deputies.

Their dispute followed an earlier televised debate in September about opposition votes on social programs.

García challenged the opposition over claims about the National Electoral Institute, while López said she had always supported social programs and invited lawmakers to check the voting records.

García defended her record of winning elections by direct vote and said she would continue questioning the opposition in Congress.

López accused García of making false claims and compared her to former electoral institute head Guadalupe Taddei; Labor Party lawmaker Lilia Aguilar also spoke in García’s defense.

The exchange reopened disputes over social programs and the electoral authority, but no further action is described.

I am Vianey García. Nobody has given me a proportional-representation seat from the heights of power. Every election I have contested, I have won.
