Bardolino marks 100 years as Chiaretto rosé sales grow

Bardolino’s wine consortium is marking its 100th anniversary in the Verona area of northern Italy.

The denomination produced about 18 million bottles in 2025, including 8.8 million bottles of Chiaretto rosé, which grew by 3%.

Chiaretto is made from local red grapes, and its production is nearing that of Bardolino red wine, at 9.5 million bottles.

Producers describe Bardolino as fresh, easy to drink and relatively low in alcohol, qualities they believe can appeal to younger drinkers.

Exports account for 60% of the denomination’s business, and producers say tourism around Lake Garda also helps introduce visitors to the wines.

A study is using 36 years of grape-ripening data to examine climate change and help producers choose when to harvest; training for members and tastings in Warsaw are next.
