Supreme Court warns Rajasthan of CBI probe over river pollution and illegal mining
The Supreme Court warned Rajasthan it could order a CBI probe if the State fails to address damage to the Jojari-Luni-Bandi river system.
The case concerns pollution in the Jojari river, which serves as a lifeline for nearly two million people in Rajasthan.
The court questioned officials over mining leases regularised after illegal mining was detected and said the State shared responsibility for the pollution.
It had previously directed authorities to seal unauthorised discharge points and take action against those responsible for lapses.
The State must submit a financial proposal for treatment plants using technology designed to prevent liquid waste from being discharged.
The State and industries may both have to pay for treatment facilities and pipelines to return treated water to industrial units.
Rajasthan has until November 27 to present its proposal, ahead of the next hearing, when the court is expected to issue detailed directions.
