Local NGO to co-manage wildlife reserve in the DRC for the first time
Strong Roots Congo will co-manage Itombwe Nature Reserve in South Kivu province with the Congolese Institute for the Conservation of Nature.
The partnership is a first for a local nongovernmental organization in the modern history of the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Strong Roots has secured nearly 600,000 hectares of community land for a corridor linking the reserve with Kahuzi-Biega National Park, and aims to secure 1 million hectares.
The DRC recently recognized community rights to manage forests in its National Forest Policy, adopted three months before the partnership was announced.
Many protected areas in the country were created by evicting Indigenous people, worsening conflict between communities and park authorities.
The partnership brings a local group into reserve management as the country’s policy recognizes community rights.
