Estadão to host debates on economic challenges facing Brazil’s next government

As Brazil’s presidential campaign enters its final days, a live debate series will examine challenges facing the next government.

The discussions will involve economists, business leaders and researchers, and will consider what to expect whether Lula or Flávio Bolsonaro wins.

The first debate, on October 19, will focus on public finances, with economists Felipe Salto and Gabriel Leal de Barros.

Brazil’s gross public debt reached 82.9% of GDP in August, its highest level since March 2021, and there is no current expectation that it will stop rising.

On October 20, business leaders Pedro Parente and Roberto Gianetti da Fonseca will present proposals covering areas such as taxes, spending, productivity and energy.

A debate on October 22 will examine social protection and the job market, including how Brazil can better connect employment and social benefits while managing limited public funds.
