US offers up to 17 million barrels from strategic oil reserve
The US is offering up to 17 million barrels of reserve crude through an exchange with companies.
The Department of Energy issued the offer on Friday as governments respond to tight oil and fuel supplies.
The oil is part of the US share of a wider emergency release announced by the International Energy Agency in March.
The US reserve currently holds about 283 million barrels, and taking the full amount before repayments would bring it to roughly 266 million.
Companies would have to return the crude later, with premiums of up to 24% required in a previous offer.
That earlier offer attracted commitments for only about 500,000 barrels, showing that companies may not want oil on costly repayment terms.
The US is making this offer as the IEA accelerates releases of emergency stocks, including diesel, while commercial US crude inventories have been falling.
The US Department of Energy invited companies to bid for an exchange of up to 17 million barrels of crude from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve.
The offer is part of the 172 million barrels the US committed to make available under an international emergency release announced in March.
The broader agreement involved about 30 International Energy Agency member countries making 400 million barrels available.
Companies would later return the borrowed crude, with premiums of up to 24% required in a previous offer.
A similar offer in June resulted in companies agreeing to take only about 500,000 barrels.
