Macron to meet student groups as protests continue
Emmanuel Macron will meet students and student-group representatives at the Élysée Palace on Friday afternoon.
The French president’s office says the meeting is meant to hear their concerns after recent student protests, some of which involved violence.
Louis Letoublon, a vice-president of the group Les Lycéens !, said the invitation surprised student groups because they are due to meet Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu on Monday.
The groups plan to press for changes including ending Parcoursup, France’s university admissions platform, and opening more university places.
They also want changes to school timetables and better-maintained school buildings.
Macron’s meeting comes as a student consultation ends, which his office says is why it is taking place now.
Letoublon said he did not expect much from the president, but plans to present students’ demands.
