China and Mexico may suspend Brazilian poultry imports after Newcastle disease case
Brazil confirmed a Newcastle disease outbreak at a commercial turkey farm in Nova Itaberaba, Santa Catarina, in the country's south.
The farm has 6,000 birds, and this is Brazil's second recorded case; the first was in Rio Grande do Sul in 2024.
China and Mexico may temporarily suspend Brazilian poultry imports, though Brazil's Agriculture Ministry says no international trade has yet been interrupted.
China could initially halt imports from across Brazil, while Mexico may later limit restrictions to Santa Catarina or the affected municipality.
Japan is expected to restrict imports from Nova Itaberaba, and Argentina may limit trade within 10 kilometres of the outbreak.
The ministry says official veterinary services are controlling the outbreak and that inspected poultry products are safe to eat.
Brazil will notify importing countries, and China will assess technical information before deciding whether to allow exports to resume.
