24 Sussex renovation fund reaches $5.7 million, or 11% of its goal

The Rideau Hall Foundation says more than 4,000 donors have given $5.7 million to renovate 24 Sussex Drive in Ottawa.

That is 11.4 per cent of the $50-million fundraising goal set in June.

The 35-room house was home to nine Canadian prime ministers from 1951 to 2015, but has been vacant since Justin Trudeau became prime minister.

Its poor condition kept Trudeau from moving in, and Mark Carney now lives at Rideau Cottage on the grounds of Rideau Hall.

Carney’s plan is to renovate and reopen the residence, with the federal government covering security costs.

The foundation has formed a council to build support, while firms are being invited to submit renovation ideas; a winning design is expected by Canada Day 2027.
