Ukrainian drones hit Sberbank data center in Russia

Ukrainian drones struck a Sberbank data center overnight on October 14 in Balakovo, in Russia’s Saratov region.

The facility is still under construction and is planned to host a major supercomputer.

Sberbank said its systems and services kept working, and that no employees were injured.

Saratov’s governor said one person was killed and homes were damaged in the strikes.

The attack followed Ukrainian drone strikes on data centers owned by Russian technology company Yandex the previous week.

Ukraine has said it is responding to Russian attacks on its own data sites, and the strikes matter because Sberbank is a leading Russian developer of artificial intelligence.

It is not clear whether any supercomputer equipment was damaged in the attack.
