Italy opens applications for reduced settlement of local tax debts

Italy has opened a settlement scheme for some local tax debts, including vehicle tax, property tax, waste tax and traffic fines.

It covers debts owed to municipalities, regions and other local bodies that were assigned to the state’s tax collection agency.

Only debts from about 1,500 participating bodies qualify; taxes collected directly by local authorities or private contractors are excluded.

People who qualify pay the original amount and certain administrative costs, but not penalties, interest or collection fees.

They can check eligible debts and amounts by requesting an online information statement from the agency.

Applications run from 16 October to 15 December 2026 and must be filed online.

The agency will tell applicants what they owe by 28 February 2027, with payment due in one sum by 31 March or in up to 54 two-monthly instalments.
