Nicolas Cage Was Once Attached to Play Iron Man

Before he played Ghost Rider, Nicolas Cage was attached to play Iron Man in a planned Marvel film.

A 1997 report said Cage was firmly attached to the role, which he reportedly considered his favorite Marvel hero.

The film was never made, and the sources do not say who would have directed it or where it would have been produced.

At the time, Iron Man was not yet a major screen superhero, and the idea of a Marvel cinematic universe did not exist.

Robert Downey Jr. later played Tony Stark in the film that helped make Iron Man a major Hollywood character.

Cage went on to play Ghost Rider in films released in 2007 and 2012.

Cage's unrealized role remains a piece of alternate cinema history, with no further plans for the project described.
