Libya's central bank says its Tripoli headquarters was raided
Unidentified people stormed Libya's central bank headquarters in Tripoli on Thursday, the bank said.
The raid took place while Governor Naji Issa was away, and the bank blamed all parties involved, specifically mentioning the defense ministry, which is responsible for protecting the building.
Parliament accepted Issa's resignation in principle hours earlier, more than two months after he first announced it and parliament rejected it.
It named central bank board member Fauzi Abokhzam interim governor while it considers a final decision.
Libya has been unstable since the 2011 overthrow of Moammar Gadhafi and is divided between a U.N.-recognized government in Tripoli and a rival administration in the east.
The central bank has been at the center of political disputes before: Issa's 2024 appointment followed a standoff that halted oil production during a financial crisis.
The reason for Issa's resignation remains unclear, and the government in Tripoli had not commented on the raid.
