Indonesia to inspect Pindo Deli after gas release affected Karawang residents

Gas was released at a Pindo Deli paper mill in Karawang, West Java, on October 29, affecting people who live nearby.

Some residents had health problems, including shortness of breath, and received treatment at nearby clinics and hospitals.

The Industry Ministry says an initial account suggests rainwater triggered a chemical reaction in material being prepared for shipment, producing smoke and a strong-smelling gas.

The company’s emergency team began responding within minutes, and the ministry says the situation at the site is now under control.

The ministry will inspect the chemical handling and safety procedures to establish the cause and assess how the company manages risks.

It will continue monitoring the response and expects concrete improvements to help prevent a similar incident.
