Michele Emiliano emerges as Puglia’s leading candidate for Italy’s national elections

With a new electoral law approved, parties in Puglia are beginning to work out who will run in Italy’s national elections.

Michele Emiliano is the only candidate described as certain: he is expected to lead the Democratic Party’s list for the Chamber of Deputies.

Emiliano is a former governor of Puglia and now serves as a legal adviser to a Senate commission on working conditions, exploitation and safety.

He was excluded from the recent regional election race after the current governor, Antonio Decaro, opposed his candidacy for the regional council.

The party’s national leader, Elly Schlein, is said to want Emiliano to run in the national elections, while Francesco Boccia is also expected to run for the Senate.

Most other candidacies remain undecided, so the party’s final line-up in Puglia is still taking shape.
