Apple tests under-display Face ID for a future iPhone Duo

Apple is testing Face ID beneath the outer screen on prototypes of its next foldable phone, the iPhone Duo 2.

The current iPhone Duo uses Touch ID, and some early reviewers say it can be awkward or slow to use.

Apple may have chosen Touch ID because the foldable is very thin and can be held in different orientations, making Face ID hardware harder to fit.

The change would bring facial recognition back to the foldable line, a feature many iPhone users are used to.

Apple is also exploring whether to add the Action button, but that possibility appears less certain.

Neither feature is confirmed for the next model, and fitting Face ID under the screen depends on making its components smaller.

If development takes longer, Face ID could instead arrive on a later iPhone Duo.
