L214 challenges CO₂ stunning at Cooperl abattoir in France
Animal rights group L214 has published footage from the Cooperl abattoir in Montfort-sur-Meu, France, alleging that pigs suffer during CO₂ stunning.
L214 says the pigs take 21 to 60 seconds to lose consciousness, and show signs of distress as they breathe in the gas.
CO₂ stunning is used before slaughter, and L214 says it causes pain, fear and breathing distress rather than an immediate, painless loss of consciousness.
More than 30 veterinarians have called for the method to be banned, and L214 says scientific assessments have also raised concerns.
The group is seeking a ban from the French government and says it is starting legal action against the state.
L214 also wants Carrefour to stop buying pork made using the method; Carrefour says CO₂ stunning is standard practice and that audits found Cooperl followed required rules.
Cooperl had not responded to a request for comment, and L214's campaign calls for the government to set a deadline for ending the practice.
