EU says US diesel deal will give Russia more money for its war

US President Donald Trump announced an agreement with Russian President Vladimir Putin for deliveries of hundreds of thousands of tonnes of diesel from Russia.

The United States plans to temporarily lift sanctions on Russian diesel to allow the shipments.

The Kremlin confirmed the deal.

EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said the sales would bring Russia extra revenue to fund its war against Ukraine.

She also pointed to more than 80 Ukrainian civilians killed in Russian attacks over two days and increased Russian hybrid attacks against Europe.

The EU says it will not ease pressure on Russia, and its foreign ministers plan to sanction a record number of people and organizations accused of supporting Russia’s war effort.

Trump is facing pressure in the United States over rising fuel prices ahead of important midterm elections in less than a month.
