France’s Arcom puts Europe 1 on notice over remarks about migrants
France’s media regulator put Europe 1 on formal notice over remarks made on the radio station in January.
Presenter Christine Kelly said that many migrants were rapists during her programme, “Christine Kelly et vous.”
The discussion followed a rape case in Nice in which the main suspect was a Tunisian national who was under an order to leave France.
Arcom said the remarks could encourage hatred and discrimination against migrants because of their origin or nationality.
It said Kelly’s qualification that she did not mean all migrants did not undo the broad generalisation, and noted that other people on the programme did not respond.
The station had already received a warning about similar breaches, including in a letter sent in January.
The formal notice is not a financial penalty, but it requires Europe 1 to meet its obligations and comes before any possible sanction.
France’s audiovisual regulator Arcom ordered Europe 1 to comply with its obligations after presenter Christine Kelly said many migrants are rapists.
The remarks were made during a January 26 broadcast of “Christine Kelly et vous” about a rape case in Nice.
Arcom said the remarks could incite hatred and encourage discrimination based on origin or nationality.
The regulator said Kelly’s caveat that she did not mean all migrants did not sufficiently reduce the generalization.
The order follows an earlier warning to Europe 1 and is not a financial penalty.
