US-to-China oil tanker charter costs about $80 million

Chartering an oil tanker to carry oil from the United States to China now costs about $80 million.

That is more than the roughly $74 million cost of a standard SpaceX Falcon 9 launch.

The price surge reflects a global shortage of tankers as shipping flows are disrupted around the Strait of Hormuz.

Middle Eastern producers are increasingly transferring oil between ships, a process that can add about a week to a voyage and keep tankers busy longer.

Attacks, rerouting and changes in where oil is being shipped have also reduced the number of ships available for some journeys.

Higher shipping costs make crude oil more expensive for buyers, squeeze refineries’ margins and add to inflation pressures in energy markets.
