Salobreña cemetery dig finds remains of about 20 children
A two-week excavation at Salobreña cemetery in southern Spain was seeking a grave linked to Civil War victims.
The team found remains of about 20 individuals, from fetuses to children aged nine, as well as an adolescent male.
The finds appear to be burials from after 1940, and researchers say they are not currently linked to the Civil War or Francoist repression.
The remains may reflect the hardship and poor medical care of the postwar years, though experts need to study them before drawing firm conclusions.
The campaign did not find the victims it was looking for, but it helped rule out some areas and showed where further searches may be useful.
Researchers say future excavations may extend to other parts of the cemetery where victims could be buried.
