NDR television presenter Hanni Vanhaiden dies

Hanni Vanhaiden, a longtime NDR television presenter, died in Hamburg on 11 October.

Reports give different ages for her: one says 84, while others say 88.

She became widely known from 1967, after moving from the Hamburg State Opera ballet to television.

Her short, pale-blond hair and large glasses became her trademarks, and she was described as Germany’s first presenter to appear on air wearing glasses.

She also hosted the children’s show “Emm wie Meikel” and appeared in other television programmes, acted, sang and voiced radio plays.

Her career ended as NDR phased out its announcer service in the 2000s.

Family and friends announced her death in a notice, and viewers have shared tributes to her.
