US forces disable St. Kitts-flagged ship near Iran after blockade warnings
The US military disabled a cargo ship in the Gulf of Oman on Saturday after it tried to leave the region following a visit to an Iranian port.
The St. Kitts-flagged vessel was targeted by a US aircraft after its crew ignored repeated warnings, according to US Central Command.
The action is part of a months-long US naval blockade on Iran near the Strait of Hormuz, a major route for global shipping and oil.
Central Command says the blockade has stopped Iran from exporting more than $25 billion in crude oil.
The US also says it is creating a task force to restrict Iran’s movement of advanced weapons and other sanctioned goods across land borders and the Caspian Sea.
The incident comes as Washington and Tehran remain at odds over Iran’s nuclear program, while mediators work on proposals to end the conflict.
Iran has demanded that the US lift the blockade and sanctions, among other conditions, before nuclear talks can begin.
U.S. Central Command said an American military aircraft disabled a commercial vessel in the Gulf of Oman on Saturday.
The St. Kitts-flagged ship had visited an Iranian port and was trying to leave regional waters, according to the command.
U.S. forces said they directed the crew to leave targeted spaces before the aircraft fired precision munitions at the vessel’s stern.
The command said the ship ignored repeated warnings and attempted to breach the naval blockade of Iran.
The U.S. military also announced a task force to target Iran’s movement of advanced weapons and other sanctioned material.
