Air strike kills dozens of goldminers in northern Sudan

An air strike killed dozens of goldminers in northern Sudan on October 10, near the Egyptian border and the Red Sea.

Sudanese rights groups put the death toll at 72, while unconfirmed media reports say as many as 200 people may have died.

No group has claimed responsibility, and neither Sudan nor Egypt has identified who carried out the attack.

The miners were working in a country gripped by civil war between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces.

Many displaced people turn to dangerous mining to earn money and feed their families as fighting and hunger deepen hardship.

The conflict has displaced at least 14 million people, and the deaths have prompted grief and anger among Sudanese people.

Sudan and Egypt say they are investigating, but the sources do not say when their inquiries will conclude.
