US Army’s HADES spy plane completes first flight

The US Army’s HADES prototype completed its first flight, moving the aircraft from concept toward testing.

HADES is an aerial surveillance plane being developed to help commanders gather information over greater distances than conventional tactical intelligence aircraft.

Its planned systems will combine multi-domain sensing and signals intelligence, which can collect and analyse information from the electromagnetic environment and other sources.

The Army says this could help commanders detect threats earlier and understand activity across land, air, sea, space and cyberspace.

The capability is intended to support Army and joint force operations, including in contested areas.

Developmental flight tests come next to assess the systems’ effectiveness, integration and readiness.

The Army says the evaluation will help prepare HADES for upcoming operational demonstrations.
