IEA speeds up release of oil reserves, prioritising diesel
The International Energy Agency will speed up the release of oil reserves to address high fuel prices and tight diesel supplies.
The decision was made at a meeting in Paris and follows calls from G7 countries, including Germany, France, the United States and Japan.
The plan is to bring more than 20 million barrels of diesel to market as soon as possible, with diesel given priority.
This is not a new reserve package: it speeds up a release agreed in March in response to the Iran war, which covered 400 million barrels of oil and oil products.
The IEA says about 330 million barrels have been released so far, while roughly 100 million barrels of promised stocks remain to be brought to market.
The extra supply is intended to ease pressure on fuel prices, but the decision does not guarantee that prices at the pump will fall.
The IEA says diesel supply remains tight because of disruptions to exports from the Middle East and Russia and limits on refinery output.
The International Energy Agency agreed on Oct. 15 to speed up the release of more than 20 million barrels of diesel from existing emergency reserve commitments.
The move is intended to ease tight global supplies and rising fuel prices linked to disruptions in the Middle East and Russia.
The diesel is part of a broader reserve release pledged by IEA members in March, not a separate new stock package.
The IEA said the remaining committed reserves should be released as soon as possible, with countries taking their own circumstances into account.
