Brazil's federal debt rose to R$9.4 trillion in September

Brazil's federal debt reached R$9.4 trillion in September, up 0.97% from August, the National Treasury said.

The rise in domestic debt was driven mainly by R$89.3 billion in interest costs, alongside R$3.8 billion more in bond issuance than redemption.

Domestic debt was R$9 trillion, while external federal debt fell 0.82% to R$345.4 billion.

Separately, Brazil's gross debt stayed at 82.9% of GDP, its highest level since 2021, according to the central bank.

Higher interest costs are adding pressure to public borrowing, while the Treasury also cited greater investor caution linked to US monetary tightening, higher bond yields in advanced economies and conflict in the Middle East.

The government's debt cash buffer stood at R$1.3 trillion, enough to cover 7.71 months of bond payments.

The Treasury bought back R$31.6 billion in bonds after market turbulence and said it is watching conditions and can act if markets become dysfunctional.
