Mexico’s election authority prepares complaint over alleged corruption

Mexico’s National Electoral Institute is preparing a complaint for federal prosecutors over alleged misconduct during former president Guadalupe Taddei’s tenure.

The institute’s interim head, Blanca Cruz García, said all 10 electoral councillors agreed to have their legal teams prepare the filing.

The complaint will not name specific people, but could cover Taddei and other officials if investigators find grounds to examine them.

Allegations of corruption have emerged in recent weeks, including claims involving officials and contractors; they have not been established as fact.

The institute says 30 officials have resigned and is reviewing senior posts, contracts and possible irregularities.

The complaint is intended to help determine responsibility, while the Superior Audit Office and the institute’s internal control body also have investigations open.

The institute’s council is due to consider measures to support the audit, and its review of contracts is continuing.
