UK pub closures could reach 360 this year, costing 5,000 jobs
Pubs across the UK have been closing at a rate of about one a day this year.
The British Beer and Pub Association says 295 had shut by the end of September and estimates that 360 will close by the end of the year.
It expects about 5,000 jobs to be lost, with more than half of them held by people under 25.
The association says rising costs and pressure on customers’ spending are making it harder for pubs to stay open.
Closures also affect local communities and are expected to reduce government tax receipts.
England has recorded 226 closures, with the South East seeing the most and the North East the fewest.
The Prime Minister has promised a 20% business rate cut for pubs, social clubs and live music venues in England from April.
