Brazil's opposition rejects support-for-pardon proposal from Senate leader
Brazilian opposition senators rejected backing Senate leader Davi Alcolumbre in exchange for a pardon or amnesty for former President Jair Bolsonaro.
Alcolumbre plans to discuss a humanitarian pardon for Bolsonaro with President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, or to seek an amnesty through Congress if Lula does not agree.
Bolsonaro has been in prison since August 2025 over his participation in an attempted coup.
Opposition senators say they do not trust Alcolumbre and want him to deliver on an earlier promise to reduce sentences for January 8 convicts.
Congress approved that measure, but a Supreme Court judge suspended it, and opposition senators also want to pursue the impeachment of Supreme Court justices.
The proposed pardon is not winning opposition support, and Alcolumbre may seek to advance a pardon or amnesty before the next Senate leadership election, though allies say that is unlikely.
Brazil’s Senate opposition has rejected the idea of supporting Senate President Davi Alcolumbre’s re-election in exchange for a pardon or amnesty for Jair Bolsonaro.
Most opposition senators say they will not back Alcolumbre and instead prioritize reducing sentences for people convicted over the January 8, 2023 attacks.
The opposition’s Senate candidates are Rogério Marinho and Tereza Cristina, and its main agenda includes impeaching Supreme Court justices.
Alcolumbre has told allies he will ask President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva to support a humanitarian pardon for Bolsonaro, or seek congressional approval for an amnesty if Lula refuses.
Senator Laércio Oliveira said the proposal is intended to ease political tensions and is not linked to the Senate leadership election.

What people are saying
What is at stake is something much bigger than an amnesty or pardon for Bolsonaro.
It is the country’s democracy. The Senate needs to restore harmony and independence among the branches of government.
Obviously not. That was already agreed back then. We supported him in 2024 with that promise [of amnesty].
He is advocating for pacification between the branches of government.
