Xi Jinping votes in Beijing district people's congress election

Xi Jinping voted in a Beijing district election on Nov.

6, the day of local people's congress elections in the city.

He cast his ballot at a polling station in the Xicheng district, choosing a district-level people's congress representative.

The elections are part of a wider round of county- and township-level elections across China.

More than one billion voters are expected to directly elect over 2.6 million representatives at those levels, according to the figures given.

People's congresses are bodies whose representatives exercise state power, and county and township representatives make up most of China's five levels of people's congresses.

Xi called these elections a foundation of the people's congress system, and called for oversight throughout the process to ensure the election is properly conducted and produces representatives people are satisfied with.

The current round of elections is continuing across the country.
