New York comptroller urges Anthropic to delay IPO over AI risks

New York City Comptroller Mark Levine urged Anthropic to delay its planned IPO until it better controls risks from its AI technology.

Levine sent his request to Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, who has also called for slower development of advanced AI models.

The city’s pension funds provide retirement benefits to more than 750,000 people and manage $330 billion.

They currently have about $7 million invested in Anthropic, but a public listing could make the funds long-term shareholders if the company enters stock indexes they track.

Levine said safety, security and other concerns should be addressed before investors are asked to assess the company.

Anthropic began preparing for an IPO in June, and one report cited by a source says it could happen in November, though the company has not confirmed a date.

The sources do not say whether Anthropic will accept Levine’s request.

I therefore urge Anthropic to pause the IPO process so that the company may fully address these key issues, ones which investors must also assess,
