Lee appoints South Korea’s first special inspector since 2016

South Korean President Lee Jae Myung appointed former prosecutor Choi Kil-su as special inspector on Oct.

23.

The role covers corruption allegations involving the president’s spouse, relatives and senior aides.

The inspector can keep watch on the president’s spouse, relatives within four degrees of kinship and senior presidential officials.

The post was created in 2014 but had been vacant since its first inspector left in September 2016.

Choi is the first special inspector appointed since 2016, after lawmakers adopted a confirmation hearing report on him with support from both parties.

The appointment restores a watchdog role intended to scrutinize those close to the president.

Choi’s task is to investigate alleged wrongdoing involving the president’s circle.
