Bolzano rejects migrant reception proposal as majority splits

A public initiative asked Bolzano to join Italy’s SAI reception system for migrants.

The proposal was brought forward by the Abitare network, which gathered nearly 1,000 signatures over the summer.

Supporters said joining could bring ministry funding for migrant reception programmes and help the city manage migration and workers’ housing needs.

Opponents argued the city lacked suitable accommodation and time to start the project, and raised questions about what would happen after the two-year support period.

The city council rejected the proposal, but some members of the governing majority did not vote with the opposition to it.

The debate took place amid wider arguments over housing in Bolzano, including a separate provincial proposal for students and older people to share housing, which was also rejected.

It is not about expanding reception but about managing the situation better. And above all, ministry financial resources, not municipal ones, would be used.

The Municipality does not have the facilities to start a project of this kind: apartments would have to be rented and there is not enough time to get started if the deadline is in a month.

Before voting, a whole series of questions should be clarified, for example what happens after the two years.
