Conte tells Justice Minister Nordio to resign over comments on youth violence

Five Star Movement leader Giuseppe Conte criticized Justice Minister Carlo Nordio at an event in Italy’s parliament in Rome.

Conte objected to Nordio’s reported call for mass arrests of young people and expanded juvenile prison capacity as a response to violence.

He said people must be held responsible for violent acts and crimes, but argued the government was relying too heavily on security measures.

Conte said Nordio should leave office because those remarks were not fit for a politician.

He also said many young people had lost hope of improving their family circumstances or reaching the security their parents had enjoyed.

Conte blamed political leaders for undermining young people’s hopes by offering mainly punitive answers.

He called for Italy to recover after what he described as four years of decline despite substantial European funding.
