Lapid urges effort to restore bipartisan US support for Israel

Democrats won control of both houses of the US Congress in midterm elections, amid voter frustration over the US-Israel war on Iran.

Israeli opposition leader Yair Lapid said the result showed that Israel must work to restore support from both US parties.

He argued that Benjamin Netanyahu’s government has damaged Israel’s standing and urged the incoming Israeli government to repair ties with moderate Democrats.

Lapid proposed a US listening tour involving politicians and leaders from religious and ethnic communities.

Congressman-elect Brad Lander rejected the tour idea, saying Israel should focus on international law and human rights.

Netanyahu’s coalition lost its parliamentary majority in Israel’s election, but his main rival, Gadi Eisenkot, has no clear path to replacing him.

Lapid wants Israel to rebuild bipartisan support, but the sources do not say what the incoming government will do next.
