Political activism brings couples together in Brazil

In Brazil, political activism has helped some couples meet and grow closer.

João Roberto Lopes and Luciana Vargas Fraga met at a 1989 campaign event for Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in Rio de Janeiro, and have followed his political career together.

In recent years, political divisions have caused tension and distance among some couples and families, but one psychoanalyst says there are signs of renewed willingness to live with differences.

During Lula’s 2026 campaign, supporters revived a joke about a “Ministry of Dating” and set up a WhatsApp dating network for Lula supporters.

Its chat groups are divided by phone area code, and members can talk with one another there.

Another couple, Lia Moreira and João Lucas Garcia, became engaged as Lula’s 2026 election result was announced in Rio.

Their stories show how shared politics can shape relationships, even as it can also divide people.
