Most Sol protest camp organizers begin leaving to work in Madrid neighborhoods

Most committees behind the Puerta del Sol camp are disbanding after more than a month of protests for housing rights in Madrid.

The organizers say they will take their work into neighborhoods and form a wider social movement.

They are turning their focus to a general strike planned for November 11 and hope to build support among residents.

The move follows warnings from Spain’s Government Delegation that ending the camp could be legitimate, and some organizers say hundreds have left since the warnings.

The camp is not entirely gone: accounts differ on which committees and groups remain, but a homelessness association is still there.

The organizers say the protest helped put housing on the public agenda, but Congress has not yet voted on two housing decrees.

The remaining camp is being cleared gradually, while the movement’s next stated focus is organizing in neighborhoods ahead of the strike.
