South Korean woman gets suspended sentence for false rape complaint

A Busan court gave a woman a suspended prison sentence for falsely accusing her former partner of attempted rape.

She filed the complaint in December 2020, after he had reported her to police for alleged trespassing and other offences.

She said he had tried to force sex and had hit and choked her, but the court found those claims were false.

The woman admitted the false complaint within a month, and police decided not to refer her former partner for prosecution over rape.

The judge said false complaints must be punished and that the accusation likely caused him serious distress.

The court also considered that she was 19 at the time, had no prior convictions and regretted what she had done.

She received six months in prison, suspended for two years, so she will not serve the sentence unless the suspension is revoked.
