Explosion and fire at Regensburg apartment building injure several

A blast and fire hit an apartment building in Regensburg in southeastern Germany early Wednesday.

Residents reported a loud bang at about 4 a.m., and the building soon caught fire.

Several people were injured and taken to hospitals; police described the number as in the single digits, and no deaths had been reported.

Parts of the building’s front collapsed, making it difficult for firefighters to reach some areas.

Two neighboring apartment buildings were evacuated, and their residents were given temporary shelter in a nearby restaurant.

Police said there was no immediate danger to the wider public, but advised people to avoid the area because of heavy smoke.

The cause is still under investigation; police suspect a gas explosion, but this has not been confirmed.
