Sony Japan discontinues its last standalone Blu-ray player

Sony Japan has discontinued its last standalone Blu-ray player, the UBP-X700/K.

The move means customers in Japan can no longer buy a new dedicated Blu-ray player from Sony.

Sony had stopped shipping the player in February and relied on remaining stock for sales.

The PlayStation 5 is now Sony’s only device that can play Blu-ray discs, according to the available information.

Sony has also said it will stop producing physical game discs by January 2028, prompting concern that a future PlayStation 6 may not include an optical drive.

The change is part of a wider retreat from Blu-ray hardware: LG ended player production in 2024, while Elecom and Buffalo stopped making PC Blu-ray drives this year.

Sony’s announcement concerns its standalone players in Japan; it does not say that Blu-ray discs themselves will stop being made.
