Bitcoin falls to its lowest level since mid-September

Bitcoin fell to $75,463, its lowest level since mid-September, before trading at $76,241 later on Thursday.

The drop came as Democrats won majorities in both chambers of the US Congress, changing the political balance in Washington.

Investors were also selling technology shares amid concerns that new political scrutiny could affect artificial intelligence and data-centre companies.

That wider retreat in risky assets added to pressure on crypto, with the total cryptocurrency market value falling 4.22% to $2.56 trillion in 24 hours.

The election result also raised uncertainty about future US rules for digital assets, while some lawmakers are seen as more sceptical of cryptocurrencies.

The industry had hoped Congress would pass the CLARITY Act, which aims to set a regulatory framework for digital assets, but progress on the bill by year-end now looks unlikely.
