Ukraine says Starlink speed limits disrupted military drone missions

Ukraine says SpaceX restricted speeds on military Starlink terminals used by its forces, without warning, on Tuesday night.

The limits reportedly affect StarShield, a military version of the satellite service used by drone operators.

A Ukrainian presidential adviser said the restriction disrupted several missions, while another account said drones lost their connection and could not complete a mission.

Ukraine uses these connections to guide drones in Russian-occupied areas, including in strikes that disrupt Russian logistics.

Ukrainian officials suspect the move may be political, amid pressure from the Trump administration for Kyiv to stop attacks on Russian oil refineries, but they have not shown evidence linking the restriction to that pressure.

Poland’s foreign minister publicly asked Elon Musk whether he was using Starlink for political purposes; Musk had not responded at the time.

SpaceX and the White House had not explained the restrictions, and the available accounts do not say whether or when they will be lifted.

I confirm that (Starlink owner) SpaceX implemented speed restrictions on Starlink terminals while in motion last night. Currently, the restriction applies to the StarShield 'military service package' and limits speed to 100 miles per hour (160 kilometers per hour)

It is likely that the company ‘SpaceX’ resorted to such measures at the request of the Trump administration.
